The main cutoff valve for the water line entering most homes is a Bellows Gate Valve. These are simple valves with a swing handle type of control. When the handle is aligned with the pipe, the water is on. When the handle is perpendicular to the pipe, the water is off. While these valves tend to be durable, some of them will need to be replaced as they age or when new water pipes are installed.
Pipe Cutter
The pipe cutter slices through copper tubing and pipe. This specially designed tool employs a sharpened cutting wheel to shear through a pipe’s exterior wall. A pipe cutter’s blade protrudes from the interior of a C or U shaped body. A turn of the tool’s knob causes the body’s mouth to open or close. A plumber places copper tubing or pipe inside of the mouth, tightens the cutting disc against the pipe’s exterior and turns the tool around the pipe until the disc shears through its wall. The pipe cutter creates a burr and shaving-free cut, leaving the pipe ready for sanding and soldering. Pipe cutters quickly and cleanly remove gate valves from in-line locations and cut replacement pipes to desired size.
Soldering Torch
The soldering torch heats gate Bellows Globe Valve connections, copper pipe and fittings during the soldering process. A soldering torch consists of two basic parts: a fuel tank, commonly propane, and a torch tip. The torch tip attaches to a threaded connection atop the fuel cylinder. A knob on the torch tip’s side allows a plumber to open, close and control fuel flow from the cylinder. A plumber opens the fuel valve, lights the gas with a spark and holds the flame against a valve, pipe or fitting. The plumber presses solder against the heated joints, the solder melts, flows around the joint and cools to create a solid weld.
Emery Cloth
Essentially a type of sandpaper, emery cloth abrades and cleans the exterior of pipes prior to soldering. Emery cloth arrives in a long, rolled strip. A plumber tears a small piece of emery cloth from its roll, wraps it around a pipe’s end and sands the copper surface until clean and shiny. Build-up, grease and oxidation on a pipe’s surface prevent solder from creating a solid weld; emery cloth prepares metal surfaces to accept solder.
Tubing Brush
The tubing brush cleans the interior of fittings, such as Gate Valve solder connections. This brush appears as a series of thick bristles protruding from the end of a wire rod. A plumber inserts the bristled end of the brush into a pipe fitting or gate valve solder connection and twists the brush to abrade and clean the surface. Like emery cloth, the tubing brush prepares a metal surface for welding.
